Heritage Academy’s head football coach, Sean Harrison, was unanimously appointed head of school after a nationwide search.
Harrison has been serving as the interim head of school since January when it was announced Greg Carlyle and the Heritage Board of Directors came to a mutual agreement on a change of leadership.
Carlyle served as the head of school for nearly 10 years, and after the end of his contract in May, he will move on from Heritage.
Harrison has worked at Heritage for six years and served as the athletic director, high school principal and head football coach. He will relinquish his current roles as the athletic director and high school principal with the school when he assumes the headmaster position on May 1. He will remain head football coach for at least the 2022 season.
“We plan on hiring a high school principal and athletic director,” Harrison said. “With football, obviously, my heart is with the kids and I don’t want to leave this bunch, so I will be coaching football at least one more year.”
When it comes to filling those roles, Harrison said he is waiting on one more hire before announcing who will step in as the athletic director and high school principal.
Harrison said he is excited for the opportunity to be the head of school at Heritage Academy, and it is one of the schools where he has felt the most at home.
“The Heritage family has been very good to us,” Harrison said. “I say all the time that I didn’t spend two years anywhere before I got here, and now I’m going on year seven. It’s because of the Heritage family and taking care of us. … I’m looking to grow that sense of community and continuing to build that partnership with parents so we can do this together and really provide a great experience both academically and athletically as well as in the arts and all of those other facets for our kids.”
In his time at Heritage as the principal, Harrison has assembled a committee and led the creation and completion of comprehensive strategic plans for virtual learning and re-entry back to school during the pandemic according to a school press release.
Harrison has a master of education degree from Mississippi University for Women and a bachelor of science in English degree from Delta State University. He has experience in many private schools across the state and experience with Mississippi Delta Community College.
