Today is the last day to donate items to local charitable organization sending items to Haiti.
Much of the food donated to Operation Ukraine will go to an orphanage and residents in earthquake-ravaged Haiti, according to a release put out by the organization.
Operation Ukraine is asking for gallon-size cans of pork and beans, chili beans, whole potatoes, dark red kidney beans, pinto beans, ravioli, green beans, corn and other vegetables. The group also wants people to donate large cans of yams, tomatoes, chicken broth, tomato and spaghetti sauce and beef stew.
“Regular size” cans of spaghetti, ravioli, beef stew and chili mac also are being accepted.
Organizers of Operation Ukraine also are accepting Spam, Vienna sausage, corn beef, tuna, chicken and mackerel.
Dry goods being accepted include powdered milk, baby formula, noodles, 10 pounds of sugar, 10 pounds of flour, spaghetti, baby cereals, oatmeal, dry beans, salt and pepper, and cake mixes. Baby formula is “desperately needed,” according to Operation Ukraine officials.
The organization also is accepting supplies and monetary donations. A list of wanted supplies includes 2,200 metal table spoons, 360 dark color towels, 2,200 creamy petroleum jelly tubes with Vitamin E; 5,000 packages of feminine hygiene pads; clothes line rope; 2,200 flashlights; 1,500 disposable razors; 500 quarter- and gallon-size freezer-style Ziploc bags; 2,200 2 to 2 1/2-gallon Ziploc bags; 2,200 18-ounce to 28-ounce plastic bowls; 10 cases of commercial-grade toilet paper; 360 paring knives; 360 boxes of Band Aids; 360 rolls of bandage tape; 360 tubes of Neosporin-type ointment; 2,200 tooth brushes; and toothpaste.
Operation Ukraine is a non-profit organization working with Counterpart International under the U.S. State Department to distribute supplies to residents of Haiti.
Items may be dropped off at Operation Ukraine headquarters, located at 803 9th Street S., Columbus, or at the Haiti relief trailer located at Watkin”s Laundry on Highway 45 in Columbus.
