A Hamilton High basketball coach was assaulted during a basketball game at Amory High School on Thursday.
Sue Verner, the head coach of the Hamilton High girls basketball team, was assaulted by the parent of a player and transported to Merit Health Gilmore Memorial Hospital in Amory where she was treated and later released.
Heather Thompson turned herself into the Amory Police Department on Thursday night and was charged with simple assault on a school official, according to WCBI, a local TV station.
Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell told The Dispatch the parent “punched the coach out” over a disagreement about whether the child should ride home on a school bus or with her parents. Cantrell said Thompson is being held at the Monroe County jail until her arraignment this morning.
Following the incident, officials stopped the game and cleared crowds out of the gymnasium.
Josh Baty, the athletic director of Hamilton High School, told The Dispatch no one at the school could comment on the incident by press time Friday morning.
