An independent group that has advocated in the past against a name change for Mississippi University for Women is hosting a series of informational meetings regarding the possibility of a merger of the school with Mississippi State University.
The Friends of the W is hosting a meeting Sunday at Mississippi Center for Nursing, at 31 Woodgreen Place in Madison, from 2-4 p.m., for alumni and supporters of the school. MUW President Dr. Claudia Limbert and other MUW staff will brief the group on the school”s financial outlook and any merger possibilities.
A second meeting is planned for 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, in Columbus, at Nissan Auditorium on the MUW campus.
Gov. Haley Barbour, in his budget recommendation to be presented Monday, is expected to advocate for the merger of Mississippi State and MUW.
The Friends of the W was formed earlier in 2009 to advocate against a name change for MUW, a move supported by Limbert. The group claims it is not affiliated with either the school”s alumni association or with the group disaffiliated by Limbert, Mississippi”s First Alumnae Association.
