When business owners leave the area to pursue other ventures, you hate to see them go, but you always wish them luck.
That said, Nicole Huff, owner of Southern Flour Bakery at 1920-2 Hwy. 45 N., is selling her bakery to open her own medical cannabis dispensary and bakery, Southern Flower, next year in Aberdeen.
Huff told me the decision to sell didn’t come lightly, but she wants to have more time for her new venture.
“I love Southern Flour Bakery, and it’s a very hard decision to sell,” Huff said. “It’s profitable and well-loved in the community, but now I have the dispensary in Aberdeen and plan to grow cannabis and process edibles. It’s just so much for me to handle. So, instead of just shutting Southern Flour down, I’d rather another local family take it over and continue its success.”
Huff had initially been approved to operate a dispensary next door to her bakery in July 2022, but the Mississippi Department of Revenue revoked her license because she didn’t obtain a privilege license from the city. Huff appealed the decision in Lowndes County Circuit Court in December.
She eventually settled with MDOR, but she found a better location for the new business in Aberdeen.
“We found a much bigger building … to grow (cannabis) and have a dispensary,” she said.
Those interested in purchasing the business can contact the bakery for more information.
Moving to Starkville, the project to locate a Starbucks and another yet unnamed retailer at the Triangle Crossing Shopping Center, located at 601 Hwy. 12 W., is making progress.
“We will finish the build outs in January,” developer Mark Castleberry said. “Then those businesses will kind of take over and finish (their spaces) out before opening in early spring.”
Castleberry’s team is working on the interior and hooking up electrical systems before finishing the building’s facade and landscaping needs. He expects those to be completed in early January.
If caffeine just isn’t your speed, maybe this update is.
Moving over to West Point, the new Zaxby’s location at 5621 Hwy. 45 N. Alt. is just about finished with its buildout and is now slated to open in early January.
Dimension Construction Contractor Phil Durity said his team has finished framing up the building and the parking lot. He is now working on hooking up the electrical systems and installing kitchen equipment, which he expects to start next week.
Once that is finished, Durity said all that is left is signage and landscaping work.
“We will have it done by around Christmas, and the restaurant should open in the first or second week of January,” he said.
Finally, my friends, Davey Jay’s BBQ, located at 599 W. Lowndes Drive in Columbus, has new hours.
Owner Jason Brock said since reopening the restaurant under his ownership earlier this year, he decided to expand the hours to Monda to accommodate more customers and bring in a little more business.
“There’s a lot of industry in the area, and we kind of felt like people need to eat lunch on Mondays too,” Brock said. “The previous owner set the old hours, and when we took it over, we maintained the status quo. Honestly, this just kind of felt like there was a need for more places to sit down and eat lunch on Monday.”
Brock set the new hours earlier this month, and the restaurant is now open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m.
Well, folks, that’s all for now. Make sure to check back in next week for more goings on in business.
