Well, folks, it’s that time of the year when shoppers brawl just to grab the last crockpot on sale, the one remaining Christmas toy for 50% off and sometimes, even the last can of cranberry sauce.
It’s the holiday shopping season and the Golden Triangle is gleaming with Black Friday deals and seasonal shopping sprees.
If you know me, I’ll always say shopping at your local stores is best, whether it’s the supermarket down the road or the family hardware store with generations of experience. In addition to my own reporting, today’s paper contains the Shopping Guide special section, a great resource to point you in the right direction for gifts and stocking stuffers.
In the guide, you can find Black Friday deals for new furniture and mattresses at Rock Bottom Furniture in Columbus, season deals on a big green egg grill at Adventure ATV in West Point, all your favorite hunting attire and firearms at Outlaw Sporting Goods in Columbus, new storage sheds, hunting blinds and truck accessories at H&H Truck and Outdoor and so much more throughout the Golden Triangle.
On the big-box side of shopping, Walmart, in typical fashion, has a variety of deals already available online. The store will open bright and early at 6 a.m. on Friday, after closing on Thanksgiving Day. The company’s Black Friday deal ads are packed with high tech savings, including new AirPods for $169, MacBook Airs for $499 and even brand new smart TV’s starting at $188.
Next up, Ashley Home Store will open Friday at 10 a.m., kicking with 35% off on items store wide the entire day. Customers can also save as much as $500 on certain mattress sets in-store and online and receive 50% on clearance items such as sofas, office furniture and mattresses.
While many stores will be closed for Thanksgiving, Dollar General will remain open Thursday. The store is also offering Black Friday deals Wednesday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. with 75% off all toys, and 50% off buy one get one free on baking equipment packs and cold weather accessories. I know I need a new beanie, so don’t be shocked if you see me out there.
Beall’s in Columbus and Starkville will open Friday at 7 a.m., where shoppers can find seasonal baby clothes starting at $6.99, six foot pre-lit Christmas trees at $49.99 and even remote-controlled cars starting at $39.99.
Ulta has had its Black Friday deals since Sunday. Customers can receive up to 50% off for items ranging from hair irons to full-body thickening lotion.
My family has never been the biggest on sporting activities leading up to turkey dinner, but me and my twin, Connor, do enjoy a nice walk with the dogs before we sit down to eat. With that in mind, Academy Sports and Outdoors in Starkville will be open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday. You’ll find 50% off on treadmills, 60% off on certain mountain bike brands and 50% off on outdoor heaters such as fire pits and propane patio heaters and up to $100 off on certain grills.
In the spirit of the holiday season, Main Street Director Barbara Bigelow is encouraging our local shoppers to remember all small business owners this holiday season.
“As always, I encourage people to shop at small, local downtown businesses during this holiday season,” she said. “When you support a local business, 70 cents of every dollar stays in our community. When you shop non-locally, only 43 cents of each dollar remains in our community. When shopping local, you receive great customer service and are shopping with a neighbor. Our downtown entrepreneurs offer amazing products, food, and experiences. Invest in your community and help keep our downtown entrepreneurs in business!”
In Starkville, the Greater Starkville Development Partnership is hosting a Black Friday Bonanza with deals going on throughout the city.
With too many savings to handle, shoppers will find discounts on clothes, restaurant gift cards and more throughout the city.
I’d be a fool if I forgot to mention that this is a time of year for giving thanks to others and spending time with our loved ones. I’ll be heading back to my family home of Dallas, Texas this year, and I pray anyone reading this has the chance to be with their families and loved ones this Thanksgiving.
Whether you spend this time shopping for local deals or watching movies on the couch, I sincerely hope you all have a wonderful holiday. Make sure to check back here next week for more goings on in business.
