I don’t know about you, but a fresh cup of coffee in the morning always hits the spot, and the same sentiment goes for new coffee shops popping up in Starkville.
Coffee Depot, located in the old BJ’s Family Pharmacy location at 223 S. Jackson St., will open June 5, owner Sarah Morgan Pellum said.
Pellum told me the latest coffee shop on the bulldog block finished construction and renovations in April and has been hiring since early May. The Depot has even been hosting small soft openings to test out some of its bakery options with its full menu of coffee mixtures. I can’t wait for a classic cafe mocha and a blueberry scone, but that’s just me.
“We are just trying to perfect all of our recipes before we open,” she said.
If you would like to get in on this early bird special of sorts, Pellum said you can visit Coffee Depot Thursday and Friday from 7 a.m.-6 p.m.
“It is really exciting,” Pellum said. “I’ve been dreaming about this for the past year. So, for it to be actually happening and to be serving people is really fun.”
Now that we are caffeinated, let’s skip on over to the Friendly City, where Felipe Hernandez, owner of Mi Hacienda, is moving ever closer to opening Sol Y Luna, a new Mexican restaurant at 589 18th Ave. N.
Hernandez previously said he was hoping to open by May 5, but if he wasn’t ready by then, he would wait until later in the month.
Well, I couldn’t get hold of Hernandez, but I have seen trucks outside stocking the restaurant with supplies, so keep a watchful eye as we wait for the sizzle of those delicious fajitas. I know I’m just dying to try it out.
In other news, a former car wash and care business is up for sale.
Petty’s Classic Car Care, a car service that closed in January at 806 Hwy. 45 N., is listed for $550,000.
Swoope Real Estate Realtor Teena Dodd said she began marketing the building in April after the Petty family decided to sell off the business following the passing of former owner Jessie Petty.
So far, Dodd has seen interest from several potential buyers and hopes to close on a deal soon, though she did not disclose when that could happen.
Across the highway, the Pittman family has opened its dispensary at 901 Hwy. 45 N. and dubbed it The Magg Dispensary.
General Manager Key Pittman said the dispensary opened May 8 and has been working out the kinks with the store while laying out plans for a grow house operation in the back half of the former Fitzner-Pontiac building.
“We just decided right now we need to get the dispensary open and running, and then we’re going to kind of just slowly ease into (the grow house),” Pittman said. “We were trying to do a couple of things at once we found we just figured the best thing to do right now is get the dispensary up and running.”
For those with medical cannabis cards, you can visit The Magg Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
Finally, my friends, we move to Caledonia for an “exotic” update.
Patch of Heaven Farms Rescue and Exotics, an exotic animal petting business located at 1606 Cal Kolola Road, will open in July, owner Michele Griffin said.
Griffin said she has finished the installation of double-high fences for some of her kangaroos but has yet to complete the construction of a birthday party building. She is taking some time to assist her daughter in a Lowndes County political campaign.
“Since my daughter’s been campaigning, we’ve been knocking on doors,” she said. “So, things have slowed down just a little bit.”
