Mississippi University for Women Health and Kinesiology students last week performed fitness tests on Franklin Medical Sciences and Wellness Magnet School students in a partnership with the Columbus Municipal School District to help the students learn to be fit for life.
All Franklin students were tested using a FitnessGram, a computerized tool with which students are tested, twice a year, in a controlled setting on cardiovascular endurance, upper body and abdominal strength, flexibility and percentage of body fat, said CMSD officials, noting parents will receive confidential test results on parent-teacher conference day.
Terrie Gooch, Franklin”s physical education instructor, this year will use fitness equipment installed with a recent $30,000 Project Fit America grant to increase student fitness levels — especially cardiovascular fitness and strength-training levels.
The fitness test information from MUW and the Project Fit programs will give Franklin students the tools they need to improve their overall fitness level and prepare them to be focused in school and fit for life, said CMSD officials.
“The partnership between MUW and Franklin Medical Sciences and Wellness Magnet School provides our students at Franklin and their parents with a fitness report and program designed to promote regular, enjoyable, physical activity for students, so that they can reach and maintain a level of physical fitness that will contribute to good health and well-being,” said CMSD Superintendent Dr. Del Phillips. “Today”s research is clear that improving a child”s physical fitness level can have positive results not only on their health, but also on academic success, as well.”
