Boxes of nonperishable food are being offered at Caledonia Town Hall for those in need of assistance.
The town is offering more than 50 remaining boxes of about 140 that were packed during the annual March of the Mayors food drive in February, which is organized by Hattiesburg nonprofit Extra Table. The boxes which include spaghetti, peanut butter, green beans and canned fruit are being offered to those in the Caledonia school district that come to city hall and ask for a box.
“People just need help and they’re not always willing to ask for it,” Mayor Betty Darnell said. “We don’t ask their name or anything. All they have to do is say they came for a food box, and we give it to them if they’re in the (Caledonia school zone).”
Darnell said that the city normally sees a higher demand for food assistance when the school year begins, because of the additional cost that comes from school supplies, which is why Caledonia has been offering the extra boxes since Aug. 2.
“People … in a community like ours, they think everybody has everything,” Darnell said. “That’s not true. There’s food insecurity every day.”
