MATHISTON — A single-vehicle crash just north of Mathiston killed a 5-year-old boy and sent the driver to the hospital.
At about 8:55 a.m. Monday, a white 1992 Mazda Protege driven by 22-year-old Keely Elizabeth Avent, of the Clarkson community in Webster County, was traveling south on Highway 403, just south of Shine Jewel Road, when the vehicle veered off the road and overturned, Mississippi Highway Patrol Public Affairs Officer Brian Mobley said.
The boy, who was a passenger in the back seat, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, Mobley said. He was declared dead at the scene.
Avent was transported to North Mississippi Medical Center in Eupora, where she was treated and released, Mobley said.
Police did not identify the boy and Mobley was unsure of the relationship between him and the driver. Mobley said he has “no idea” why Avent”s vehicle traveled off the road.
“The crash is still under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol,” Mobley said.
