OKTIBBEHA COUNTY — Oktibbeha County firefighters quickly extinguished a kitchen fire Thursday that damaged a wall but didn’t injure occupants.
The fire broke out at 10:10 a.m. at 159 Milons Lane off 16th Section Road after it started in the flue of a wood stove, County Fire Services Coordinator Kirk Rosenhan said. Firefighters from Osburn Station of the East Oktibbeha Department quickly knocked down the fire and used a thermal imager to locate hot spots and ensure the fire was out,
Homeowners Leonard and Alma Cherry discovered the fire.
Rosenhan estimated firefighters put out the blaze in an hour.
“We got to it pretty quick,” he said. “Luckily it didn’t happen in the middle of the night where it could have grown into a larger fire and possibly have injured someone.
“There’s substantial damage to the wall, but we were very sparing with our water inside the house.”
Rosenhan said the thermal imager helps minimize unnecessary damage to walls because firefighters can locate hot spots without cutting into walls.
