Troop G of the Mississippi Highway Patrol made 15 DUI arrests during the Fourth of July holiday, according to data Public Information Officer Sgt. Derrick Beckom sent to The Dispatch.
In the holiday period that ran from 6 a.m. Monday to midnight Wednesday, the troop issued 210 hazard violations, made four drug arrests and one felony arrest. There were six total collisions, one of which was fatal.
Statewide, MHP made 53 DUI arrests and investigated 76 crashes. Thirty of those crashes resulted in injuries, with four fatalities, according to the data. The fatal crashes occurred in Chickasaw, Panola, Marion and Itawamba counties.
On the local level, Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office issued nine DUI’s between Friday and midnight July 5, Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said.
Seven of those were first offenses, one was a second offense and one was a third offense. There were 44 bookings into jail and six motor accidents, none with major injury.
Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office issued three DUI’s in that same time frame, Sheriff Steve Gladney said. There were four motor accidents, one with minor injury, and two drug arrests. Fourteen traffic citations were issued.
Starkville Police Department conducted 101 traffic stops from 5 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Wednesday, Public Information Officer Brandon Lovelady said. There were 18 arrests during this enforcement period and one fatal wreck with three other injuries, still under investigation.
Columbus Police Department did not provide July 4 holiday period stats by press time.
