Columbus and Lowndes County law enforcement officials are pausing during several events this week to recognize National Police Week, which occurs each year during the week in which May 15 falls.
The week recognizes the service and sacrifice of U.S. law enforcement. May 15 is recognized locally and nationally as Peace Officer”s Memorial Day, in honor of the federal, state, and municipal officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty.
This year”s theme for National Police Week is “Will Always Remember.”
Events began today with a torch run, with representatives of local law enforcement agencies running a torch from City Hall to the Columbus Police Department.
Other events sponsored by the Columbus Police Department include:
- Prayer Breakfast for law enforcement officers and their families is Wednesday at 8 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 3200 Bluecutt Road. This event will also kick off the beginning of the department”s adopt-a-cop in prayer program.
- Candle Light Vigil is Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Columbus Police Department, 1501 Main St., in front of the building. Participants are asked to bring a candle.
