East Mississippi Community College’s annual celebration of all things artsy returns March 26-29 with the Pine Grove Arts Festival.
The Scooba campus will host four days of visual and musical performances by students, faculty and special guests, while the Golden Triangle campus in Mayhew will do the same, only condensed into one event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 28.
The public is invited to both campuses to celebrate the arts with EMCC.
“The Pine Grove Festival is an integral part of the culture here at EMCC and has been for many, many years,” said Dr. Jacqueline Stennis, vice president of the Scooba campus. “Each spring we celebrate with art exhibits, musical entertainment and activities for students and the community.”
Art instructor Lisa Spinks, who heads the Scooba Pine Grove committee, expects the atmosphere at this year’s festival to be more relaxed than usual, thanks to performances by Black Prairie blues artist Big Joe Shelton. He will sing and display his digitally enhanced photography during an exhibit and reception Monday at 2 p.m. at Aust Hall on the Scooba campus. The Mighty Lion Band will offer an outdoor performance Thursday, March 29, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Scooba campus amphitheater.
Refreshments will be available at both events and the Mighty Lion Band’s performance will be supplemented by activities like face-painting and games like “Pin the ear on Van Gogh,” courtesy of the EMCC Art Department.
Golden Triangle campus
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, March 28, at the Golden Triangle campus, part of the parking lot will be closed off to make way for an artists’ village. Local visual artists and musicians will display, perform and sell their art from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be $1 each starting at 11:30 a.m., and inflatables will be on hand for children.
