Two Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science alumni have received distinction in the U.S. Navy.
Commander Desmond Walker, commanding officer of the USS Stout, who graduated from MSMS in 1996, was named one of two recipients of the Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale Leadership Award.
Established in 1980, the Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale Leadership Award is presented annually to two commanding officers on active duty whose naval career symbolizes “the highest standards of excellence in both personal and professional leadership,” according to a MyNavy HR memo.
Candidates are nominated by peers who must be eligible for the award themselves. They are then judged by a board of nominated officers, who select the winners based on the five roles for a leader Stockdale identified in his teaching: being a moralist, a jurist, a teacher, a steward and a philosopher.
Commander Kenneth Kirkwood, commanding officer of the USS California, who graduated from MSMS in 2000, was a finalist for the award.
