Donations are needed for a garage sale fundraiser, for Earth Week activities, Saturday in Starkville.
Students for a Sustainable Campus (SSC) is hosting the Garage Sale fundraiser Saturday from 6 a.m. until 12 p.m. The sale will be at the Community Market site, located on the corner of Jackson and Lampkin streets and will feature items donated from the Starkville community. Goods to be sold were donated by community members, who found their former possessions undesirable, but valuable in the wake of their spring cleaning.
The fundraiser is designed to offer an alternative to the landfill. SSC will be accepting donations Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Boardtown Garden Center, located at 404 Martin Luther King Drive.
The students are seeking donated items, like clothing, books, furniture, appliances, electronics, games, musical instruments, bicycles and other unwanted items in good condition. Undergarments, swimming suits, clothing with holes, and unrepairable broken furniture and electronics will not be accepted.
“Recyling encompasses more than just paper and plastic,” said Hailey Hawkins, a senior communication major and core leader of SSC. “We also need to reuse items, such as clothes and furniture. By taking these steps, we can do our part to reduce our waste and ultimately help our environment.”
All unsold items from the garage sale will be donated to the Palmer Home Thrift Store.
The SSC Garage Sale is a fundraiser for various activities surrounding Earth Week, including a Sustainable Bike Tour, a speaker from the Gulf Restoration Network, and an Earth Day fair on Old Main Plaza. Students are in charge of planning these events, but the MSU Office of Sustainability and Gaining Ground Sustainability Institute of Mississippi, as well as other organizations also are involved.
