The deadline for a fired Columbus Fire Department employee to file an appeal on his termination has passed, with no appeal filed.
The Columbus City Council on Dec. 7 voted to fire Mitchell Banks, who served as a CFD firefighter for about 18 months, for violation of the city”s zero-tolerance substance abuse policy.
Banks was suspended by CFD Fire Chief Ken Moore after Banks reportedly missed part of a training session at the Mississippi Fire Academy in Jackson, was roused by the academy director and found to be intoxicated.
The council voted to uphold the suspension and Banks had 10 days, from the council”s decision, to appeal the termination to the Civil Service Commission.
Civil Service Commission Chairman Al Hatcher this morning confirmed no Civil Service Commission member had been served with a notice of an appeal, by the commission”s meeting Thursday night.
“As far as the commission knows, he has not appealed to us,” said Hatcher.
