CRAWFORD — A 50-year-old Crawford man died Monday afternoon after a fire swept through his double-wide mobile home.
Caleb Lowery, of 252 Lodge St., was alone in his mobile home when the fire started. The State Fire Marshal”s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze.
Lowery”s brother, Walter, said he did not notice any smoke or fire in the neighboring mobile home when he arrived at his property next door with a friend. But he saw the smoke and called 911 when he went to leave the house.
“When I got there, there was no smoke, nothing,” Lowery said. “I tried to crawl in there and see if (Caleb) was in there, but it was so hot. I lost my cell phone in there.”
The fire became so intense that the heat destroyed the car in front of the mobile home. Black smoke from the blaze could be seen 10 miles away.
Terry Smith, who lives on a neighboring street, said he saw the smoke when he stepped out of his house.
“I live around the corner and the smoke was pretty bad,” he said. “Then when I heard the ambulance and the fire truck, I knew it was something important.”
Smith said Caleb Lowery had problems getting around. “He was either at home or he would take the car and go fishing,” he said. He was not married, had no children and was a smoker.
A walker was found in the mobile home after the blaze was extinguished about 4 p.m. Monday. Four trucks responded to the fire, including units from Districts 4 and 5 and the industrial park.
