Chief of Police Selvain McQueen has put in his retirement papers, according to multiple city officials, including human resources director Pat Mitchell.
Though the papers give notice of McQueen’s intent to retire, they do not specify a retirement date, according to Mitchell.
McQueen, 51, declined to comment.
Ward 6 Councilman Bill Gavin said he had heard “rumblings” of McQueen’s retirement but nothing concrete saying “people’s minds change.”
“I don’t know that for a fact,” Gavin said. “I don’t know what Chief McQueen’s plans are. I just don’t know. He hasn’t discussed that with me. He may have discussed it with the mayor or other council members but he hasn’t discussed it with me so it would be premature for me to comment on that.”
Ward 3 Councilman Charlie Box said he was not aware of a retirement date for the chief either.
“I’m not aware of a date being set,” Box said. “I guess nobody knows but him.”
Mayor Robert Smith did not respond to a call concerning McQueen’s status Wednesday.
McQueen has served as chief since December 2011. He was named interim chief after former chief Joseph St. John was fired July 19, 2011.
McQueen, who previously served as chief of investigations for the department, has been with the CPD for 26 years.
