County Administrator Ralph Billingsley told the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors that the budget process is continuing as it approaches its Sept. 15 deadline.
“Lowndes County is a unit county, which means that the administrator sets the budget for the districts,” Billingsley said. “I had the department heads submit their requests back in July and we have been meeting with them and looking at their requests. From there, we will make a second suggested budget to discuss with the supervisors. On Sept. 14, I will submit the administrator’s budget and we will have a public hearing. One it is passed, it becomes the supervisor’s budget.”
In 2012, the board passed $38 million budget, with a millage rate of 40.01 mills, the same as the previous fiscal year. Billingsley said the budget will be close to what it was last year.
“We are not sure of the exact amount because I haven’t looked at the grant money, but operations-wise, it will be pretty close to what we passed last year.”
Billingsley said the new budget will also have some good news for the taxpayers of Lowndes County.
“I don’t think we will be raising the millage rate this year,” said Billingsley. “It is always the will of the supervisors to not have to raise taxes.”
The Lowndes County Board of Supervisors will next meet Sept. 14 at 9 a.m.
