Jasmine Murray of Columbus will take part in the Miss America Pageant tonight in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The 22-year-old was crowned Miss Mississippi in July at the Vicksburg Convention Center. She competed in the Mississippi pageant as Miss Riverland.
Miss America judges score contestants from the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands based on a talent competition, a personal interview, their answer to an on-stage question, and their appearance in gowns and swimsuits, according to Reuters.
Murray, while a high school student at Mississippi School of the Arts in Brookhaven, competed in the eighth season of “American Idol” in 2008. She made the top 13 on the show.
On Saturday, The Star Ledger in New Jersey named Murray a contestant to watch in tonight’s competition. The newspaper wrote: “Miss Mississippi, Jasmine Murray, 22, a onetime contestant on “American Idol,” brought the house down with her vocal performance. Though she didn’t win talent, she definitely makes an impression.”
The pageant is scheduled to be broadcast live tonight at 7 p.m. on ABC.
