A train severed a Columbus man’s leg Monday night.
Bennie Walton, 56, was on his way to a convenience store about 8:15 p.m. when he was struck by the train near the intersection of Strawberry Street and Fourth Avenue North, according to Joe Dillon, public information officer with the city of Columbus.
A witness told the Columbus Police Department that Walton attempted to crawl under the train, which was stopped at the switch yard, Dillon said. The witness was not sure whether Walton tried to crawl between the cars or under a car.
At some point, the train began to move.
Walton and his leg were transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. They were then flown to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for emergency surgery and limb reattachment, according to Dillon.
