A Columbus man died in a two-vehicle crash Saturday morning on Highway 45.
Nicholas Jenkins, 23, was identified as the driver by Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant in a text to The Dispatch on Saturday.
The accident occurred at about 10:27 a.m., according to a press release by Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Beckom.
Jenkins was driving a Cadillac Deville east on Mike Para Road and was attempting to cross into the southbound lane of traffic when the left side of his vehicle was struck by a Honda Accord, driven by a 19 year-old-female traveling south on Highway 45, the press release said.
It appeared as though Jenkins did not see the other car as he was pulling onto the highway, Merchant said. Jenkins was pronounced dead on the scene.
The driver of the other car sustained “moderate injuries” and was taken by ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, the press release said.
Merchant said her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
There were no passengers in either vehicle, and no other injuries were reported, Beckom said.
Mississippi Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
