NEW HOPE – A Columbus man died Saturday afternoon in a motorcycle wreck.
Quincy Lashawn Holmes, 30, was killed after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a pickup, Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant wrote in a text to The Dispatch on Saturday.
Merchant said the crash happened at about 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Casey Lane and Oswalt Road. Holmes was traveling north on Casey Lane before his motorcycle hit the pickup at the intersection.
Lowndes County Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said before the crash, deputies were trying to catch up with Holmes to initiate a traffic stop.
“He was going so fast that the officer never was able to get up behind him,” Hawkins told The Dispatch Monday. “… He couldn’t get close enough to him to even know if it was a male or female on the bike.”
The deputy was still about three quarters of a mile away when Holmes collided with the pickup.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Derrick Beckom said there were no other injuries reported.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation by MHP.
