The Columbus Municipal School District Board of Trustees Monday issued final approval of a lease allowing Recruitment and Training Program of Mississippi Inc. to occupy the former Union Academy building, located at 1425 10th Ave. N.
Currently occupying a facility on Second Avenue North, RTPM Inc., a private non-profit human resource and career development corporation, is expected to move into the Union Academy building July 1.
“(RTPM) helps workers who have recently lost their employment by helping to re-tool them to be able to find new jobs,” CMSD Board Attorney David Dunn earlier said. “They especially work with disadvantaged members of the community, both minorities and whites.”
The corporation has focused on improving employment opportunities for socially and economically disadvantaged individuals for more than 20 years.
Originally occupying a Southside location, Union Academy was the first free public school for African-Americans in Columbus.
The current facility was built in 1962, on the site of a former Union Academy building constructed in 1903.
RTPM Inc. will rent the Union Academy space for $1,600 a month, an amount based on a state formula regulating 16th Section land.
