Organizers say they”re expecting 1,300 Civil War re-enactors to gather in northern Mississippi this weekend to depict a battle that actually took place in Tennessee.
People dressed as Union and Confederate soldiers are reliving the Battle of Fort Donelson, which took place in February 1862 near Dover, Tenn., northwest of Nashville. The battle was a victory for the North and helped keep Kentucky in the Union.
Re-enactors from as far away as Texas, Oklahoma, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Maine registered for the event outside tiny Michigan City, Miss., a stone”s throw south of the Tennessee state line.
History buffs say they”re trying to recreate an authentic experience of a war that started nearly 150 years ago.
