The city of Columbus will host a public information meeting Thursday evening to introduce the Extreme Energy Makeover program to the community.
The meeting is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. at Sim Scott Park.
Columbus is participating in the program after receiving a $1.6 million grant from the Tennessee Valley Authority. ClearResults, an energy consultant firm, will manage the program.
Columbus Light and Water General Manager Todd Gale said the program aims to improve the energy efficiency of 125 homes in a north Columbus neighborhood near Cadence Bank. He said the Extreme Energy Makeover will focus on steps such as improving air sealing, doors, windows and insulation in hold homes to boost energy efficiency.
Information provided by city officials says the program should improve energy efficiency in eligible homes by 25 percent.
In order to qualify, a home must have electric heating and water heating, and be more than 20 years old. Mobile or pre-fabricated buildings will not qualify, nor will those that cannot achieve 25 percent electric energy savings as documented by a certified EEM technician.
Gale said residents who don’t qualify are still welcome to Thursday’s meetings, because more opportunities will be available in the next year to 18 months.
He also encouraged churches, which might know of needs in the community, and landlords to attend.
“This is a very good opportunity for citizens,” Gale said. “You’re modernizing older homes and another side benefit is you’re injecting $1.6 million-worth of construction into the area.”
