The city of Columbus is moving forward on the renovation of the historic Highway 82 bridge across the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway into a pedestrian walkway.
Officials have said the restoration of the bridge into a walkway will bring greater development to the island area to which the bridge leads.
Tuesday, the Columbus City Council unanimously approved a request to advertise for bids on the Old River Bridge Rehabilitation Project.
It is a $2.5 million project; the city of Columbus, Lowndes County and Columbus-Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau are paying $133,000 each toward the project. The remainder comes from a Mississippi Department of Transportation grant.
Election Commission
Fred Kinder is the newest member of the Municipal Election Commission. Kinder replaced Leon Speck, who resigned from the commission effective Nov. 18. Kinder will fill the remainder of the term, which ends June 30, 2013.
Street signs
The council approved adding street signage in Ward 5, per the request of a Northside Columbus Neighborhood Watch Group. Some of the signage includes adding a four-way stop sign at the intersection of 10th Street and Seventh Avenue North, placing signs that prohibit parking along the streets in various locations and adding speed limit signs that enforce a 15 mph speed limit in various locations.
Redistricting
The city also is working toward redrawing ward lines. Tuesday, the city asked Chief Operations Officer David Armstrong to seek proposals for ward boundaries redistricting.
