A Caledonia woman was seriously injured Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 50 near Gunshoot Road.
Brittany Edwards, 23, of Caledonia, was walking east along the Highway 50 shoulder at about 2 a.m. Sunday when she was struck by a Ford Expedition driven by Cynthia Lynch, 54, of Columbus, according to Sgt. Criss Turnipseed with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
There were no passengers in the vehicle.
Lynch veered off the roadway and struck Edwards before she lost control of the vehicle, veered across the west-bound lane of Highway 50 and crashed into a ditch, according to Turnipseed.
Edwards and Lynch were both injured and taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. Edwards was subsequently taken to University Medical Center in Jackson. Turnipseed told The Dispatch she had “pretty bad injuries” but remains in stable condition.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident but “charges are pending against the driver,” Turnipseed said.
A GoFundMe page was created today for Edwards. The page states that Edwards was thrown 40 feet after being struck by the Expedition.
“Brittany now suffers from many broken bones, bruises, swelling and is having tons of surgeries,” the page states. “There’s a long road to recovery. Brittany has no insurance and the driver had no license or insurance. Prayers and support for Brittany, family & friends are much appreciated.
The page had raised more than $1,100 by press time today.
