A Caledonia man was arrested Sunday morning for allegedly punching a Columbus police officer inside a convenience store.
Cory White, 39, has been charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia and auto burglary, according to a Tuesday press release from Columbus Police Department.
White was arrested after an encounter at about 9:10 a.m. Sunday at the Love’s Travel Stop on Tuscaloosa Road. He allegedly walked into the truck stop and struck the officer two times with a closed fist. White was then apprehended, the release said.
Witnesses stated White was seen going inside the officer’s patrol vehicle in the parking lot before he came inside the truck stop, the release said.
White and the officer had no prior issues or connections prior to the altercation, CPD Public Information Officer Bryan Moore told The Dispatch in a text message.
White is being held at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. Bond had not yet been set as of press time.
