CALEDONIA — With more than $130,000 in Caledonia”s general fund, Caledonia Mayor George Gerhart is exploring the possibility of using some of the money to invest in an interest-bearing certificate of deposit.
Gerhart mentioned this idea during the mayor”s report portion of Tuesday”s regular April meeting of the Caledonia Board of Aldermen.
“I would like to look at investing at least $50,000 of the $133,915 in a certificate of deposit. We already have one with Bank First that has accrued over $2,400 in interest in the last five years,” he said.
Gerhart said he plans to explore the options of which bank has the best interest rate in the coming days, and no action was taken.
Other board business
The board also heard a request from Erica Grooms regarding placing speed bumps at Wells Drive and Church Street.
“There are a lot of people who drive along that area too fast, and there are a lot of kids who pay on that street. If something is not done to get these people to slow down, some kids will get hurt,” she said.
Grooms also presented a petition bearing 80 signatures of residents of Wells Drive and Church Street.
Caledonia Town Marshal Ben Kilgore said he has issued tickets in recent days to speeders, but said he cannot spend all of his time in that one area.
On Gerhart”s recommendation, the board unanimously chose to accept the petition submitted by Grooms and take the matter about speed bumps under advisement.
In other business, the board unanimously approved hiring Johnny Suggs as chief umpire for the 2010 youth baseball season. He is scheduled to be paid $500 at the end of the season.
The board unanimously approved the request of Kolola Springs Baptist Church to use the pavilion at Ola J. Pickett Park for a youth event on Saturday, April 17. They also approved the request of New Salem Baptist Church to use the same facilities on June 5 for a youth-sponsored event.
