A suspect in a Lowndes County armed robbery led authorities on a high-speed chase through Monroe County Sunday night that ended when the suspect crashed a stolen vehicle in Aberdeen before fleeing on foot.
Law enforcement is still searching for the suspect.
The suspect allegedly held a victim at gunpoint at about 9:50 p.m. outside the Dollar General on Highway 45 near Gatlin Road and stole the victim’s gray 2008 Honda Accord, according to Det. Tony Cooper with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office. The victim was not injured.
The suspect fled up Highway 45 North into Monroe County where Sheriff Cecil Cantrell said his deputies began chasing him at about 11 p.m.
By the time the suspect made it inside Aberdeen city limits, the vehicle was traveling about 100 miles per hour, Cantrell said. The vehicle pursuit ended when the Honda drove through an intersection, through a large ditch and came to stop a few feet away from the ditch off Hickory Street. The suspect then got out of the vehicle and began running west, Cantrell said.
Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office was not involved in the chase, though authorities from the Mississippi Highway Patrol were, Chief Deputy Marc Miley said. Deputies with LCSO arrived on the scene of the crash after the victim had fled and recovered the suspect’s alleged weapon, Miley confirmed.
If found, the suspect will be charged with armed car jacking in Lowndes County, Cooper said. In Monroe County, the suspect will face several traffic violations.
“We’re just looking at the way he was driving and putting other people at risk,” Cantrell said.
