With Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant having moved into his new office space at the former Microtek Medical complex, as well as an out-of-state buyer purchasing the warehousing area right next door, there is now only one building left on the complex up for sale on Lehmberg Road.
But what are these buildings? Who was Microtek Medical? What did the company do there? And who owns what now?
What was Microtek Medical?
The complex, which was built and operated in 2004, consisted of two warehousing and distribution spaces, as well as an office building. One warehouse is 26,000 square feet, and the other is 38,914 square feet, while the office is a two-story 12,000 square-foot space with a glass facade.
The complex was originally home to Microtek Medical, which built and operated a medical supply company there at 602 and 512 Lehmberg Road until 2007.
The company and three buildings were then obtained by Ecolab in 2007. In 2015, the company downsized the Columbus facility, which manufactured surgical instruments and equipment, and moved some of its operations to Florida. Ecolab announced in 2021 that it would close the Columbus facility by mid-2022.
Who owns what now?
An out-of-state buyer purchased the 38,914 square-foot building on the north end of the property, consisting of both warehousing and office space. Realtor Royce Hudspeth previously told The Dispatch the new owner intends to lease out the building to other businesses.
Immediately south, the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors paid $500,000 for the 26,000-square-foot warehousing and office space so the coroner’s office could relocate from the old Maxxim Medical building off of Yorkville Park Square. The city of Columbus and
Lowndes County sold the Maxxim Medical building to Apex Ammunition for $200,000. Apex plans to relocate and reopen its shotgun shell manufacturing business there.
On the south end of the property lies the glass-walled building where Microtek and Ecolab housed office space for its Columbus operations.
That building consists of two stories with about 12,000 square feet. The building has been for sale since mid-2021 and is listed for $650,000, according to a listing on LoopNet, a commercial real estate website.
