July unemployment in Oktibbeha, Clay and Noxubee County rose for the third month in a row in July, while Lowndes saw no difference from June, according to data the Mississippi Department of Employment Security released this week.
Noxubee and Clay County rose the most, currently sitting at 6.1% and 4.4%, respectively. Oktibbeha County rose to 4.3% and Lowndes is still at 4.1%.
July rates for Oktibbeha, Clay and Noxubee County rose between 0.1% and 0.6%. However, rates for all four fell between 0.2% and 1%. Oktibbeha County showed the most improvement year over year.
On the state and national level, Mississippi and the nation both held their June rates through July, currently sitting at 4% and 3.8%, respectively. However, Mississippi’s rate fell 0.6% from 4.6% in July 2022 while the national rate saw no difference from last year.
The number of unemployed people in Oktibbeha and Clay County rose 950 and 410, respectively. In contrast, Noxubee County rose 200, bringing the total number of unemployed people in the Golden Triangle up by 90 people since June.
Across all four counties, there are 2,560 people unemployed, marking a 15.8% improvement from July 2022.
There are currently 49,500 unemployed people in the state, down 16.6% from 2022. Across the nation, there are 6,351,000, compared to 6,255,000 in July 2022.
