Area school children may have gotten an unexpected break due to snow and ice this year, but they”ll have to make them up. And area districts already are deciding where to add the extra days.
Columbus schools already had one weather day built into its calendar, so, thus far, they have only one day to add. Students were out on Monday and Tuesday, due to weather.
“We will wait until we get passed the ”possibility” of more snow days before we adjust the calendar,” Columbus Superintendent of Education Dr. Del Phillips said.
He expects the school board to adjust the calendar sometime in March.
Lowndes County School District also had one day to deal with, though its students also were out of school on Monday and Tuesday. The board Friday made the last day of the 2010-2011 school year May 23, a Monday; it previously was May 20, a Friday.
Judy Couey, superintendent of Starkville schools, said the district will either “make up one day on the Monday after Easter and one day at the end of school or make up both days at the end of the school year.”
“Faculty advisory members have taken the information back to their respective schools for input,” Couey said.
Oktibbeha County schools, which share services such as alternative and vocational schools, will add the same days, Superintendent James Covington said.
Aberdeen schools, which were out Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, added two additional school days to its calendar. April 18, previously a furlough day, now is a school day. Easter Monday, previously a school holiday, now is a school day. Aberdeen, as did several districts throughout the state, added furlough days to its calendar, in response to budget cuts.
“Monroe County is still in the process of determining which days we will use for make-up days,” said Scott Cantrell, superintendent of Monroe County schools. “We should know by the end of next week.”
In Columbus, today will be marked by considerable cloudiness with a high of 49 degrees. Wednesday will see the highest temperatures of the week with a high of 55, according to AccuWeather.com. A shower is possible for Tuesday.
Conditions are similar in Starkville, but Tuesday will see a high for the week, of 55, with thunderstorms possible for the day. Showers are possible for Wednesday, as well.
And in Aberdeen, the area will see its high for the week on Tuesday, 53 degrees, with the potential for showers on Monday.
