MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A spokesman for Gov. Bob Riley says he will attend the BCS Championship game with a ticket he purchased and will travel aboard a state aircraft.
The ethics laws that Riley got the Legislature to pass last month restrict free football tickets for Alabama public officials.
Press secretary Todd Stacy said Friday that Riley is a trustee of Auburn University by virtue of being governor, and all trustees were able to purchase tickets through the university at face value.
Stacy said Riley and House Speaker Mike Hubbard of Auburn plan to travel to Glendale, Ariz., on a state plane because they have to depart for Montgomery soon after the game ends Monday night. He said the speaker has to get back for the start of the Legislature”s organizational session at noon Tuesday, and the governor still has transition business to handle.
“The days are becoming few and there is still much to do to prepare the governor”s office for the new administration,” he said.
Gov.-elect Robert Bentley said he won”t be able to attend the game between Auburn and Oregon because he is busy preparing to take office on Jan. 17.
