Flag Day commemorates the country’s adoption of the American flag on June 14th, 1777. Yesterday, one family happened to honor Flag Day by replacing a worn American flag.
Vonnie Moody, owner of the Haven Airbnb, checked her phone Wednesday morning to find that the guests staying at the Second Avenue North home had sent her a message letting her know they had replaced the house’s American flag that sits in the front yard. The Mull family, visiting this week from North Carolina, had noticed Old Glory was worn, tattered and aged and decided a new flag was needed.
Retired Lt. Col. Joey Mull brought his entire family to Columbus to celebrate his son-in-law’s graduation from pilot school at the Columbus Air Force Base. Many members of his family staying in the Airbnb were also CAFB graduates and others had previously graduated from the Mississippi University for Women.
“What a cool historic house,” Mull said of the Haven, an antebellum home built by free men of color circa 1843. “We booked it because of the location and the fact it had room for the whole family, and it was such a cool experience staying there.”
Mull noticed the damaged flag and took it upon himself to replace it.
“I was chilling outside having coffee one morning, a nice breeze blowing and the flag whipping, and it came to my attention that it was worn and tattered.” Mull said. “As a return to them for their hospitality I went and bought another flag and we raised it and folded the old one and left it there for them.”
Moody said she was extremely touched by this kind gesture.
“It shows how close our air base family is intertwined with our community,” said Moody. “It’s so special that this happened on flag day…I love my community and I love my country, this is just so touching.”
