STARKVILLE — A teenager was shot dead in the street Sunday evening, Starkville Police Department has confirmed.
Police are seeking suspects in a fatal shooting at the intersection of Hilliard and Sherman streets that claimed the life of James Clifton Hester Files, 17.
Officers responded to the scene at about 5:17 p.m., SPD spokesperson Brandon Lovelady said. Files was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lovelady said investigators do not have suspects in custody but believe the suspects fled on foot to a wooded area after firing the shots. He said detectives think the victim and suspects knew each other . SPD is investigating the motive of the shooting.
This incident happened a block west of a March 4 shooting outside an apartment complex near Henderson and Pilher streets that killed two victims. Lovelady said investigators “have no reason to believe” the two shootings are related.
Anyone with information on the shooting to contact SPD at 662-323-4131 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at 800-530-7151. Crime Stoppers may offer a cash reward.
