A Columbus man has been charged with murder after he allegedly fatally shot another man in south Columbus early Wednesday morning.
Columbus police arrested Aaron James Mitchell, 27, of Summerhaven Drive, Wednesday for the death of Marty Christopher Moore, 28, of Columbus.
Mitchell shot Moore at about 12:30 a.m. at the 2200 block of Ninth Avenue South, according to a Columbus Police Department press release. Investigators said the Moore and Mitchell knew each other and that they became involved in an argument that “quickly escalated into the violence,” the press release said.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said an ambulance took Moore from the scene of the shooting to the hospital, where he died. His body has been taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Pearl for autopsy.
Investigators have recovered the gun.
The shooting is still under investigation.
Moore is the second person to die from gun violence in less than a month in Columbus. On July 20, 16-year-old Arykah White died at a birthday party at Propst Park. Curtis Lathan, 17, was arrested for her murder.
On Tuesday, Columbus Mayor Robert Smith released a statement to media asking citizens to “lay down your weapons,” in light of both White’s death and two mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas over the weekend that left more than 30 people dead and captured national headlines.
“If you have a problem with someone else, gun violence is not the answer,” Smith said. “We need to start respecting each other and each other’s ideas and opinions. We must do a better job of communicating with one another without insults and sarcasm.
“It is mandatory that these drive-by shootings in cars and homes stop immediately,” he added. “If not, we will be dealing with another tragic death.”
He also said it was not the fault of city officials, police or teachers when shootings occur and that “discipline and good life choices begin at home.”
Mitchell is in custody at Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. His bond has not been set.
