A couple of long-standing family-owned Columbus funeral homes have become one.
The Memorial Burial Association has purchased and merged Memorial Funeral Home and Gunter and Peel Funeral Home, said Willis Puckett, who owned and operated Memorial Funeral Home, along with his son, Greg Puckett.
“They will continue to be operated as they have been,” said Willis Puckett. “We”re always looking for better ways to serve the people of Columbus, Lowndes County and the surrounding communities. That”s our first goal, better service. We have a dedicated staff at both locations that will be working together to meet all the needs that arise.”
“This is a proud time for Gunter and Peel to be associated with the Puckett family and Memorial Funeral Home,” owner Hollis Peel said. “We have always strived to give the best, professional service possible and now, we can take that to an even higher level. We have been blessed to serve Lowndes County and all of its surrounding communities and we look forward to remaining dedicated to all patrons.”
Memorial Funeral Home has been family-owned for more than 70 years; the funeral home wrote its first burial policy — for $150 — in 1930.
Columbus” oldest and largest funeral home, Gunter and Peel, located at the corner of College and Ninth streets in downtown Columbus, was begun in 1893. The funeral home is in its third generation of continuous family management.
