For the 10th year, city officials are welcoming the public to the Riverwalk on Saturday for the annual Mayor’s Unity Picnic.
The picnic, scheduled for 4-8 p.m., is a chance for the community to come together for a good time, said Mayor Robert Smith.
Smith said Johnny Coleman and his band, Swingshift, will perform music, and Ward 6 Councilman Bill Gavin and Rick Mason will DJ for the picnic.
“We always encourage the people to come and I would hope they want to take the opportunity to be part of this wonderful occasion,” Smith said. “We’ll have food, games, music and a lot of fun for everyone.”
Smith said meals, including catfish, hot dogs, coleslaw, baked beans and drinks will be served at the event. He also encouraged people to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on.
The picnic regularly draws more than 2,000 people, and Smith said attendees come from Columbus and surrounding communities in the region.
“It’s a great way to have fun and fellowship, and to have a nice, wholesome meal,” Smith said. “We have a very diverse group of people down there at each one of the events.”
The picnic is sponsored by Smith, the Columbus-Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau and Columbus Lowndes Recreation Authority.
Smith said local businesses donate funding, equipment, food and drinks to CLRA for the event.
CLRA Executive Director Greg Lewis said he’s hoping to see a big crowd for the picnic.
“We want everybody to come out,” Lewis said. “It’s a great place for the children to come, with the family atmosphere. It’s a good, solid picnic for everyone.”
