The Preservation Society of Columbus will honor local Disney legend Joshua Meador during the city’s annual Arts N’ Antiques Weekend with two special events celebrating his life and legacy. The events are presented in partnership with the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library, the Columbus Arts Council, and the Columbus-Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Meador, a native of Columbus, became a legendary animator for Disney, working on films including Fantasia and Sleeping Beauty. The Preservation Society’s weekend events aim to bring his story to life for families and history enthusiasts alike.
“We’re thrilled to bring Joshua Meador’s story to life in such a creative and meaningful way,” said Betty Bryan, board member for the Preservation Society. “Partnering with the Columbus-Lowndes Visitors Bureau for Arts N’ Antiques Weekend gives us the opportunity to showcase Columbus’s rich cultural legacy while engaging families, visitors and history lovers alike. It’s going to be a magical weekend.”
The weekend opens with “Reimagination: Create, Play, Discover” on Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library. Designed for children ages 3 to 9, the free event will feature storytelling, animation-inspired crafts, a costume contest, face painting and other activities inspired by Meador’s work.
Later that afternoon, guests can explore Meador’s childhood neighborhood on the Joshua Meador Neighborhood Tour, which runs from 3 to 5 p.m. and begins at Wisteria Place, 524 Eighth St. N. Led by historian Rufus Ward, the guided walking tour includes stops at Wisteria Place and Aldan Hall, a live skit performance by Spence Andrews, historical insights, and canapés and desserts. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students, available at the door or online at visitcolumbusms.org.
The Preservation Society’s events are part of a full weekend of activities in Columbus, including Stevens Auction Company’s Antique Rug Auction and Wine and Cheese Preview and Main Street Columbus’s Downtown Christmas Open House, where local shops will open for early holiday shopping with festive décor and seasonal treats.
Founded to protect and celebrate the architectural and cultural history of Columbus, the Preservation Society hosts tours, events and educational programs throughout the year. Through community partnerships and public engagement, its goal is to help the city’s legacy continue to inspire future generations.
