STARKVILLE — Residents from the senior living community The Goldton at Adelaide in Starkville enjoyed a special outing this week as they visited the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Horse Park, where the four-legged hosts quickly stole the spotlight. The group spent the morning meeting the horses, offering treats and experiencing gentle, guided interactions with help from MSU veterinary students and faculty.
Elizabeth Norman, sales and marketing director of The Goldton at Adelaide, said the visit was a highlight for many.
“The residents had a great time meeting the horses and seeing the students in action,” Norman said. “Some of the horses were shy, some curious, but every resident found a way to connect and enjoy the visit.”
Along with the fun, the trip also offered meaningful wellness benefits. Research has shown that equine-assisted activities can help improve mood, reduce stress and encourage social engagement — important components of overall well-being for older adults.
Gentle interaction with animals can lower blood pressure, stimulate memory and provide a sense of purpose, especially for seniors who may have grown up around farms or horses. Even brief visits have been shown to enhance emotional connection and spark conversations that continue long after the activity ends.
For The Goldton at Adelaide residents, the experience provided both relaxation and a chance to learn something new. MSU students shared insights about horse care and veterinary science, giving residents a behind-the-scenes look at the university’s hands-on training programs.
The Goldton at Adelaide extends sincere thanks to the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine students and faculty for welcoming the group and creating an enriching experience. For more information on The Goldton at Adelaide please visit their website atlasseniorliving.com/the-goldton-at-adelaide/
