A 14-year-old girl was shocked with a Taser after she and another juvenile allegedly attacked two police officers Friday following the Columbus-Noxubee County high school football game.
About 50-60 students and parents witnessed the assaults and the Tasing at about 10:30 p.m. near the north end of the athletic field house, said Columbus Police Department Public Information Officer Terrie Songer.
One officer was punched as she was trying to break up a fight between several juveniles in the middle of the crowd.
Another officer came to her assistance and arrested a 16-year-old boy, who had cussed officers because his brother had been hit in the nose during the fight, Songer said.
While making the arrest, the assisting officer was pushed and hit on the side of the head by the boy”s 14-year-old sister, Songer said.
The girl was warned several times to back away before she was Tased, she continued.
“She didn”t listen, and the Taser was deployed,” Songer added.
The girl was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle for removal of Taser probes. Tasers work by shooting two probes, which have small needles at the end connected to wires, into a subject, and send a jolt of electricity, disabling them.
The officers will remain on active duty while the internal affairs officer of the Columbus Police Department investigates whether they were justified in using the Taser, Songer said.
“(The investigation) will be as fair and unbiased as if another department was doing this,” she said.
The department also plans to re-evaluate how it works Columbus High games.
“Two officers being assaulted is really unacceptable,” Songer added.
The 16-year-old was charged with interfering with police duties and resisting arrest.
Charges of interfering with police duties and simple assault on a police officer were filed against the 14-year-old in juvenile court Monday.
