Columbus police say a 14-year-old boy who made his getaways in his sister”s car is responsible for a wave of auto break-ins across the city.
Thursday, the boy was spotted breaking into a car in the K-Mart parking lot, at 2308 Highway 45 N., by a witness who called police. When officers arrived, he drove off in a waiting vehicle believed to belong to his sister.
Officers chased the vehicle to Taco Bell in the K-Mart parking lot, where the suspect abandoned the car and fled on foot. Officers were unable to apprehend the suspect at that time, but later traced him to the River Hill Chevron at 229 Main St., where he was arrested and charged with burglary of an automobile.
The car driven by the suspect had been witnessed in the vicinity of multiple recent automobile burglaries. The juvenile, whose name was not released bcause of his age, is believed to be responsible for six or more recent car burglaries.
Other felony arrests reported Friday by the Columbus Police Department:
- Phat Vinh Tang, 20, of 1919 Old Aberdeen Road in Columbus was arrested Thursday by the CPD on one count of statutory rape.
Tang was arrested at his home at 4:15 p.m. No bond or court date has been set.
- Wendy Schmitz, 26, of 30 County Road 395 in Water Valley, was arrested Tuesday by the CPD on one count of felony shoplifting.
- Lacey Yeager, 26, of Water Valley, was arrested Tuesday by the CPD on one count of felony shoplifting.
- India Smith, 24, of 905 Hemlock St. in Columbus, was arrested Wednesday by the CPD for false pretense. Smith provided a counterfeit insurance card in Columbus Municipal Court.
