East Mississippi Community College running back Gavin Griffin had one of the best seasons at his position in the NJCAA, and the Velma Jackson product has been honored for his efforts.
On Saturday, the National Junior College Athletic Association named Griffin a member of the NJCAA Division I Football All-America First Team after he led the country with 22 touchdown runs and finished second nationally in rushing yards with 1,168. The Troy University signee, who also was named the MACCC North Division’s Offensive Player of the Year, is the 35th All-American under head coach Buddy Stephens.
Griffin compiled six games with at least 100 yards rushing, including a career-high mark of 220 yards and four touchdowns on 22 attempts to help EMCC defeat Pearl River Community College 49-27. He also charted 189 rushing yards and three scores on 23 carries during the Lions’ 34-28 triumph at Northwest Mississippi. In the Stephens’ era, Griffin’s 1,168 yards are the third most behind Rod Moore’s 1,303 yards in 2011, and his 207 carries set a new mark for the Lions. EMCC finished the year 7-3 overall and 5-1 in conference games.
