OXFORD – Ole Miss stayed the course and stayed hot.
The Rebels erased a late four-run deficit and walked off Florida 10-9 on Friday afternoon at Swayze Field. It’s the team’s sixth win in a row.
Florida came back and won the second half of the twinbill, 11-8, to avoid a sweep.
Brendan Lawson cracked a grand slam for the Gators in the top of the eighth of the day’s first game to put them up 9-5. Austin Fawley cut into the lead in the bottom half with a two-run single into left field.
In the bottom of the ninth, Luke Hill, Isaac Humphrey and Ryan Moerman each drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Will Furniss then lined the first pitch he saw down the right field line for a game-tying double. Campbell Smithwick was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Hayden Federico came on as a pinch hitter and grounded into a fielder’s choice, but Fawley was able to bring in the winning run home with a sac fly to center.
Fawley led the Rebels with 5 runs batted in. Furniss and Mitchell Sanford each had two.
Ole Miss (21-6, 6-3 SEC) used seven pitchers on Friday, most notably Walker Hooks. The freshman southpaw tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out seven. Hudson Calhoun pitched the last two innings and earned the win.
Sanford got the scoring started with a solo shot in the bottom of the first. Luke Heyman answered with one of his own in the top of the second. Bobby Boser put Florida (19-11, 1-8) ahead with a two-run single and Brendan Lawson hit a sac fly to make it 4-1.
The Rebels got a run back in the third and Fawley tied it on a double in the fourth. Sanford then put the Rebels back on top with his second solo home run of the day. Heyman tied it back up with a double in the top of the seventh.
