STARKVILLE — The Starkville High School baseball team advanced to the second round of the MHSAA Class 6A playoffs with a 1-0 win over Hernando in nine innings Saturday.
Banks Perry scored the winning run for the Yellow Jackets (16-13) in the ninth. Ethan Pulliam threw 7.1 shutout innings, striking out 13, and Brennon Wright led Starkville with three hits.
The Jackets won their series 2-0 and will play Lewisburg next week in the second round. Game 1 is Thursday in Lewisburg.

Cleveland Central 5, West Point 4, Saturday
WEST POINT — West Point was eliminated from the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs with a 5-4 home loss to Cleveland Central on Saturday.
The Green Wave dropped Game 1 3-2 on Friday in Cleveland.
The Wolves will move on to face Ridgeland in the second round.

The Pickens Academy (Alabama) softball team split a pair of games at Thursday’s region tournament.
The Pirates wrapped up the day with a 13-8 loss to Coosa Valley Academy (Alabama). Baylee Jaynes led Pickens with a single, double and triple in a 3-for-4 night. Lily Lowery went 2 for 3 with a double and a triple, Lizzie Noland went 2 for 3, and Courtney Dudley had a double.
In a 7-3 win over Heritage Christian Academy (Alabama) earlier Thursday, Kate Wilkins went 4 for 4 with three singles and a double. Noland and Morgan Shires each went 2 for 3.
Pickens is a No. 2 seed going into the AISA Class A tournament Friday at Lagoon Park in Montgomery. The Pirates’ first game will be against Crenshaw Christian Academy at 10 a.m. Friday.
