Police unions across the U.S. are pushing for officers to be able to collect workers’ compensation benefits if they suffer post-traumatic stress disorder, whether they got it from the general stress of police work or from responding to a deadly shooting rampage.
A local psychologist is offering advice to ease some of the pressures of holiday stress.
“The first thing you have to do is define stress,” Carrie White, clinical coordinator of Baptist Golden Triangle Behavioral Health Center, said. “What is stress? If you think about it, stress itself does not exists. There is no such thing.”
However, White said there are “stressors.”
The amount of money available to a person does not change the importance of sticking to a budget during the holidays.
“People from any economic group can dig themselves into a hole during the holidays if they get carried away with emotional or irrational spending,” said Bobbie Shaffett, family resource management professor with the Mississippi State University Extension Service.
