Read me a story: With quacks, neighs and moos, homegrown storytime gains a global audience
Time was, pre-COVID-19, when children’s librarian Loraine Walker — “Miss Rainey” — would regularly read books to wide-eyed youngsters at the Starkville Public Library. More often than not, she enlisted animal hand puppets as helpers. Most eager listeners were regulars who came for the stories, smiles and hugs.
Lucca: A hero dog is remembered with display at Starkville’s library
It may seem inconspicuous at first, the display case near the entrance of the Starkville Public Library. Take time to pause there, though, and meet Lucca, a remarkable dog — a military hero that served three combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, leading more than 400 patrols as she searched for explosives, targets and ammunition. No soldier was ever injured on her patrol watch.
Volunteers needed for ‘United We Read’ program
Volunteers are being sought this week for the culmination of a United Way-coordinated project aimed at encouraging reading and promoting literacy in the community.
